Before you head out to the beach or pool, you might be thinking about visiting your local tanning salon to get a jumpstart on your summer tan. However, you might want to think again.
Tanning beds, according to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer, are human carcinogens and are directly related to skin cancer. Not even the supposed “safe tanning beds” (those using only UVB rays) are safe enough to protect your skin from the harmful effects.
The only way to truly protect yourself is to avoid tanning beds at all costs.
Why Avoid Tanning Beds
Still not sure it’s necessary to avoid tanning beds? Below are a few more reasons:
Premature Aging – Tanning salons like to use UVA rays because they produce a longer wavelength, which results in the golden brown tan. Great, right? Wrong! This longer wavelength is extremely damaging to the skin, causing harm to the collagen and elastin fibers. This then leads to premature aging, wrinkles, age spots, uneven skin tone, saggy skin, and more.
Causes Acne – Some believe that tanning beds can help clear acne. However tanning beds actually produce the opposite effect. The harmful rays are so bad for you that they kill your skin’s ability to build new collagen, preventing the skin from repairing itself and making breakouts worse.
Weakened Immunity – The WHO researchers have found that overexposure to UV rays may weaken your immune system, leaving you defenseless against diseases, illnesses and more. Not only are you more vulnerable to illness, but the UV rays are also said to weaken the effects of immunizations and cause reactions to medications.
Eye Damage – Even though you wear googles/eye stickers when tanning, the thin layer of protection doesn’t protect against cancer around the eyes or damage to the retina and cornea. Photokeratitis and cataracts have both been linked to the overexposure of UV rays, which can be painful and seriously damaging if not caught early.
